When you think of Virginia as a possible place to visit, likely a number of towns come to mind as possible destinations. Historical Williamsburg, sunny Virginia Beach, and perhaps the mountainous regions of Winchester and Abingdon attract outdoors enthusiasts. Yet, if you consider adding Richmond to your itinerary, you will treat yourself to a visit that is uniquely Virginia, historical and cultural.

Why do I love Richmond? I can think of five reasons immediately:

1) The Diamond - It doesn’t necessary sparkle, but come baseball season the Diamond shines with Richmond’s AAA club, the Braves. As the top farm team for Atlanta, you just may have the opportunity to see a major league ball player down for rehab, as well as few minor players destined for the big time.

2) Richmond Raceway Complex - NASCAR and racing fans call it home, but so does the annual Virginia State Fair. When you’re not gripping the sides of the stands as cars speed past at breakneck speed, spend some time in late September - early October for a multitude of games and agricultural exhibits.

3) White-water Rafting - Think you needed to go further north to enjoy the rapids? The James River through Richmond offers a great opportunity to get wet and ride some Class IV wild water. During the peak summer months, Richmond is the only place to be for in-city rafting.

4) Carytown - This quirky shopping district is a haven for fans of eclectic clothing and treats. Independent shops, cafes, and boutiques line the streets. You won’t find any chain stores here.

5) Children’s Museum of Richmond - Fun for all ages. This interactive museum has many educational and creative exhibits that are guaranteed to please.

History, adventure, and unique Southern culture define this truly Southern capital. If you love Virginia, you will definitely love Richmond.
