Originally built in the early 18th century for the Caliph of Zanzibar, Kisimani has been carefully restored and extended. Exquisitely detailed vidaka (intricately carved plaster work) around the old harem section of the house serves as an exotic reminder of its history. A heavy carved Lamu door; a baraza, the traditional outdoor sitting area for conducting business; squared and painted mangrove beams-all contribute to the museum quality of this Arabian night house.
There is an open central courtyard, miscellaneous cool terraces and verandas, the ocean and even distant Lamu Town. There are pillars and arches brilliantly white washed, masses of vivid bougainvillea, a cowrie shell wall, and carved Swahili-style furniture. You feel you have stepped into some exquisite and exotic world-a haven of peace and beauty.
On the first floor is the eating terrace which is open to the sky and shaded by bougainvillea. Comfortable cushioned benches are built in along the parapet wall and there is a hammock. On the third level, carved veranda beds shaded by a makuti roof, offer lovely views over Shela and the channel-views framed by waving palm fronds.
Spread among the various levels of Kisimani House are four bedrooms each with a bathroom. By far the nicest and grandest bedroom is the Harusi or Honeymoon room which you enter through its own carved door and which has an enormous bed with pillars and a ceiling fan within the mosquito net. There is a sitting area and private terrace with a view into the courtyard.
You are cared for by a cook who is adept at preparing all manner of seafood and some exotic Swahili dishes. He will do the shopping and keep the accounts. There is also a houseman to clean, do laundry etc
Staying in Kisimani house is totally relaxing and pampering-a holiday in itself. However, there is a marvelous beach just a short walk away and the interesting and exotic Shela village and Lamu Town to explore.
Kisimani House rents for $ 200 per day for 2-4 people and $300 per day for 5-8 people. This price includes accommodation and house staff. Food is extra.
Johari House
Johari House is another beautiful private house in Shela. It is very close to Kisimani and similar in several respects. The house is of historic interest with vidaka (intricately carved plaster work) around the old harem section on the ground floor. There is Lamu style furniture, open terraces, a partially covered outdoor eating area, and comfortable cushioned places to sit. The re is a cook who prepares primarily seafood meals and again, it’s just a short walk to the beach. It caters comfortably for six guests.
North of Lamu is a choice of romantic beach resorts known for secluded beaches, water sports and total relaxation.
Living in these Lamu private owner vacation rentals is an experience worth trying when traveling to Lamu Kenya as a large group or a family. Lamu guest houses are simply a home away from home at the Kenyan Coastline. You will simply be spoiled rotten with a cook, fully furnished house, house care takers and all the friendliest people you can ever get.
