Living in the Mideast - Part 2

Kuwait is not a very big country! It is probably about the size of RI with a Texas and a California next to it. Since Kuwait discovered Oil in 1938, things have been on the up and up. Kuwaitis drive a huge number of Mercedes and BMW’s. They are quite affluent. In fact I had heard that the Kuwait Govt. shares its oil wealth with its citizens. Citizens each get a monthly stipend; also receive income from being sponsors for foreign workers. Only citizens may own property so that rental income is also a factor in their standard of living. Medical care is free and Oil and Electricity is cheap! They have beautiful malls such as the City Center and the Marina Mall. There are dozens of McDonald’s, several Burger Kings, and numerous Starbucks too. I’ve eaten at Applebees, KFC and Hardy’s. There are also Fridays, Chi Chi’s, Chili’s and a brand new Hard Rock Cafe in Kuwait City. There is building going on everywhere. The highways are very nice also but the drivers are very fast. I’ve never seen so many wrecks than over here. Once you get out of the congested mid section of the country, it turns to desert. Going in a southerly direction you start to see the sheep herders and their flocks. You start to see an occasional camel.

When you get nearer to Saudi Arabia, there are herds of camels. They come in several colors. I’ve seen brown ones, tan, grey and even a few white camels. One morning, I was driving down this same hwy and there were 8 camels in the middle of the highway. I came to a stop while another driver was jamming on his brakes. These are massive animals. They are thinner than a moose but probably a little taller. You don’t want to hit one let alone 8 of them. Kuwait has an open range and they go where they want to. They are pretty proud of their camels. This is just one more reason why you don’t want to hit one of these one hump camels. The fines are in the thousands! I have pictures of some of the camels but they are on my home comp back in the states. Sometimes, sheep and goats are in the road too and you have to stop and wait.

John Sprague is a resident of Bellingham, MA and is presently working in the Mideast. He hopes to end his tour as a contractor sometime in the early spring.
