The Wigwam Motel is made up of 15 teepees. Made of steel and concrete the teepees contain double beds and air conditioning while maintaining their authentic look.
Chester E. Lewis founded the village after getting the idea from a village in Kentucky owned by Frank Redford. Already the owner of several motels along Route 66 Lewis decided he wanted a Wigwam village of his own.
Lewis struck a deal with Redford that, if he used the idea of a Wigwam hotel, he would put radios in each Wigwam that would play for an hour for a dime. Redford would then keep the dimes.
Lewis was then free to use the Wigwam idea and went on to built seven Wigwam villages between 1930 and the 1950.
The Wigwam Motel has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
The Wigwams have all modern conveniences including Cable TV, Heat, AC and a full bathroom with showers. However, remember you are staying in a tepee so this isn’t going to be the Ritz! Still if it’s an adventure your after and vacation that will really be a conversation starter then the Wigwam Motel is certainly worth checking out.
